History of Mascota
Early Times and Spanish Arrival
Long ago, before the Spanish arrived, Mascota was the main town of a cacicazgo. This was a local area ruled by a chief. It included nearby towns like Talpa, El Tuito, and Chacala.
In 1525, a Spanish explorer named Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura came to Mascota. He was sent by Hernán Cortés to explore and claim lands north of Colima. This area was later called "Valle de Banderas".
Rebellion and Independence
About ten years later, in 1535, the local people in Mascota and other nearby villages rebelled against the Spanish. This was a fight for their freedom.
After Mexico became independent from Spain, big changes happened. In 1824, the Department of Mascota was created. The town of Mascota was then officially called Villa de Mascota.
Becoming a City and a "Magic Town"
On April 10, 1885, Villa de Mascota was given the special title of "city". This was a big honor for the town.
More recently, in 2015, Mascota received another special title. It was declared a "Pueblo Mágico", which means "Magic Town". This program highlights towns in Mexico that have unique natural beauty, rich history, or special traditions.
