Discovering Mashes Sands
Mashes Sands is found about 6 miles (about 10 kilometers) south-southeast of a town called Panacea. You can reach it by following Mashes Sands Road. This beach sits on a small piece of land that sticks out into the water. On its west side is Ochlockonee Bay, and to the east is the larger Apalachee Bay. From the beach, you can look out over the amazing Gulf of Mexico.
A Glimpse into History
Mashes Sands has a small but interesting history, especially during the Civil War. On July 15, 1863, two ships from the Union Navy, the USS Stars and Stripes and the USS Somerset, attacked the area. They were targeting "salt works" here. Salt works were places where people made salt by boiling or evaporating seawater. Salt was very important during the war for preserving food, so the Union Navy tried to destroy these sites to hurt the Confederate army.
