How it Started: The Early Years
Back in the 1960s, Mashpee Commons was just a regular shopping center. It was called the New Seabury Shopping Center. It had about 62,000 square feet (5,760 square meters) of shops. There was also a big parking lot in front.
Over time, a food store there became a Star Market. This store later closed around 2006. Its space was then divided into smaller shops. The movie theater from those early days is still open today as Regal Cinemas.
From Old to New: The Transformation
In 1986, new owners bought the shopping center. They began to change it into Mashpee Commons. The first new buildings were put up where the Stop & Shop is now. This is on the east side of Route 151. Other new shops were also built along Route 151. Over the years, even the old fairgrounds were turned into shops and other places.
What's Next for Mashpee Commons?
There are many exciting plans for the future of Mashpee Commons. The people who developed it want to add more homes and businesses. They also plan to create a village-style green space. This is important because Mashpee did not have a town center before the Commons. This is partly because Mashpee was once a reservation for the Wampanoag people. Their way of life was very different from the white settlers.
Fun Community Events
The owners of Mashpee Commons care a lot about the local community. They host many fun events throughout the year. These events include concerts, fireworks shows, and even an Oktoberfest celebration.
