The Mason Cornwall House stands at 308 South Hayes Street in Moscow, Idaho. It was built in 1889, which means it is over 130 years old! The house shows off a mix of two popular styles from the late 1800s: Victorian and Italianate. These styles were known for their fancy details and grand looks.
What Makes It Special?
The builders, Lauder and Taylor, created this house with great care. They used a special technique for the stucco finish. This made the brick walls look like they were made of large, perfectly cut stones. This was a popular way to make homes look more elegant and expensive. The house's design and construction make it a significant landmark.
Building Materials and Style
The walls of the Mason Cornwall House are very strong. The first floor walls are about 16 inches (406 mm) thick. The second floor walls are a bit thinner, at 12 inches (305 mm) thick. The builders used special "Troy brick" from a company in Troy, Idaho. This shows how local materials were used to construct homes back then.
The house has many features typical of the Italianate style. It has a hipped roof, which means all sides slope down to the walls. The windows on the first floor are round-arched. They also have decorative molding around them. This molding goes all the way around the house, adding to its elegant look.
Cool Architectural Features
You can see rusticated quoins under the roof's cornice. Quoins are decorative blocks that look like they support the corners of a building. The ones on this house are "rusticated," meaning they have a rough, textured finish. The cornice is the decorative molding that runs along the top of the walls, just below the roof.
Look closely at the roof's eaves, which are the parts that hang over the walls. Underneath them, you'll find handmade metal brackets. These brackets are about 2 feet (0.6 meters) high. They add a lot of charm and detail to the house. The original roof had interlocking metal shingles. It also had a small square structure with windows on top. Today, the roof is covered with red tiles, which replaced the old shingles.
