History of Matón Arriba
Early History of Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico became part of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened in 1898, following the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Before this, Puerto Rico was controlled by Spain.
Population Counts Over Time
After the war, the United States government started counting the people living in Puerto Rico. In 1899, the first count showed that Matón Arriba and a nearby area called Toíta had a combined population of 1,390 people. This helped the government understand how many people lived in different parts of the island.
