The Mata River is a river located on the East Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It's an important waterway that helps form a bigger river system in the area.

About the Mata River

The Mata River starts its journey high up in the mountains. It flows from the slopes of Mount Arowhana. This mountain is part of the Raukumara Range. The river then travels towards the northeast.

Where the River Flows

As the Mata River flows, it eventually meets up with another river called the Tapuaeroa River. This meeting point is close to a small town called Ruatoria. When these two rivers join, they create a new, larger river known as the Waiapu River.

Reaching the Pacific Ocean

The Waiapu River, formed by the Mata and Tapuaeroa rivers, continues its path. It flows until it reaches the mighty Pacific Ocean. The Waiapu River enters the ocean near a place called Rangitukia. This spot is about 10 kilometres (6 mi) south of East Cape. So, the Mata River is a key part of this journey from the mountains to the sea!
