Mate Dolenc (born 5 October 1945) is a famous Slovene writer and translator. He writes many different kinds of books. These include novels, short stories, and books for children. He also writes travel stories and articles.
Mate Dolenc was born in Ljubljana, which is in Slovenia. This was in 1945. He started studying literature at the University of Ljubljana. However, he decided to become a writer instead. Since 1973, he has worked as a full-time writer. This means he writes books and articles for a living.
He has written over thirty books. He has also written screenplays for movies. Mate Dolenc is well-known for his books for young people.
Mate Dolenc's Love for the Sea
Mate Dolenc loves scuba diving. This passion often shows up in his stories. Many of his books are about the Adriatic Sea and its islands. He writes about the sea for both adults and young readers.
In 2008, two of his popular novels became movies. These were The Gorjanci Vampire and The Sea at the Time of the Eclipse.
Awards for His Books
Mate Dolenc has won important awards for his writing.
In 1986, he won the Levstik Award. This award was for his children's novel Morska dežela na železniški postaji. The title means The Land of Sea at the Railway Station.
In 1995, he received the Prešeren Foundation Award. He won this for two of his works. One was his novel Pes z Atlantide (The Dog from Atlantis). The other was his collection of short stories Rum in šah (Rum and Chess).
