Mather is a small community in Wisconsin, United States. It is not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it is an unincorporated community. This means it is part of a larger area called Kingston in Juneau County.

You can find Mather along Wisconsin Highway 173. It is about 16 miles (26 kilometers) northeast of a city called Tomah. Mather even has its own post office! Its ZIP code is 54641.

History of Mather

Long ago, a train track ran right through Mather. This track belonged to the Wisconsin Valley Railroad. Later, it became part of the Milwaukee Road. Trains traveled on this track from Tomah all the way to northern Wisconsin.

But over time, trains stopped using parts of this track. The section from Tomah to Babcock was closed down in stages. This happened during the 1920s and 1930s. Today, Wisconsin Highway 173 follows the path where the old train tracks used to be.

There was also a smaller train line that branched off from Mather. It went northwest into Jackson County. This line helped move logs for the logging industry. It also served a few small towns. But this branch line did not last long and was closed before 1900.
