Matheson House is a special old building in Perth, Ontario, Canada. It was built a long time ago, in 1840, for a man named Roderick Matheson. He was a successful businessman in the area. Later, he became an important politician, serving in the Senate of Canada.

What is Matheson House?

Matheson House is a two-story building made of strong sandstone. It has five sections on its front, which architects call "bays." The house was designed in a style called Palladian, which means it looks grand and balanced, like some old Roman buildings. A stone garden wall surrounds the house, adding to its classic look.

Who Lived There?

After Roderick Matheson passed away in 1873, his son, Arthur James Matheson, inherited the house. Arthur was a lawyer and also a politician, serving in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Over the years, other families owned the house. Eventually, the town of Perth bought it.

Matheson House Today

Today, Matheson House is no longer a private home. It has been turned into the Perth Museum. This means you can visit it to learn about the history of Perth and the people who lived there. It's a great way to step back in time!

A National Historic Site

Because Matheson House is so important to Canadian history and architecture, it was named a National Historic Site of Canada in 1966. This special title helps protect the house and makes sure it will be around for many more years for people to enjoy and learn from.
