Mathias is a small, quiet community located in Hardy County, West Virginia in the U.S. state of West Virginia. It's not a city or town with its own government, but rather an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that are part of the larger county. Mathias is nestled along the Lost River and can be found just off West Virginia Route 259.

Mathias was founded by a person named John Mathias. His old home, called the John Mathias House, is still there and is a historic landmark. Long ago, before East Hardy High School was built in Baker, Mathias had its own school. This school, known as Mathias School, taught students from kindergarten all the way through twelfth grade.
