Matt LaChappa's Baseball Journey
Matt LaChappa was a talented baseball player in high school. He was chosen by the San Diego Padres in the second round of the 1993 Major League Baseball draft. This draft is where professional teams pick young players.
Starting in the Minor Leagues
Matt began his professional baseball journey in 1993. He played for the Arizona League Padres. The next year, in 1994, he moved up to a team called the Springfield Sultans. In 1995, he joined the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He was a very good pitcher for the Quakes, winning 11 games that season.
A "Padre for Life"
In 1996, Matt was getting ready to pitch in a game. He was warming up when he suddenly collapsed. The team's athletic trainer quickly helped him. Matt was then taken to a hospital.
Padres' Amazing Support
Matt survived this serious health event. However, it affected his ability to move and speak easily. He often uses a wheelchair. Even after this, the San Diego Padres organization showed incredible loyalty. They have continued to sign him to a basic minor league contract every year. This helps Matt keep his health insurance.
Honoring Matt LaChappa
The Padres have also honored Matt in other ways. They named a Little League baseball field after him in Lakeside, California. This field helps young players enjoy the game. A special foundation was also created in his name. The Matt LaChappa Athletic Scholarship Foundation helps high school students pay for their college education. This shows how much Matt LaChappa means to the Padres and his community.
