Matthew Moran, born on May 15, 1969, is a famous Australian chef and restaurant owner. You might also know him from his many appearances on TV cooking shows.
Growing Up and Starting Out
Matt Moran grew up on a dairy farm near Badgerys Creek, west of Sydney. Later, his family moved to Seven Hills. When he was just 15 years old, Matt decided to become a chef. He left Grantham High School to begin his cooking journey.
Even while he was still in school, Matt worked on weekends. He helped out in the kitchen at the Parramatta RSL Club. He then started his official training, called an apprenticeship, at La Belle Helene Restaurant in Roseville. This is where he learned how to cook classic French dishes.
Opening Restaurants
In 1991, Matt Moran opened his very first restaurant. It was called The Paddington Inn Bistro. This restaurant was a big success! Because of this, he and his business partner opened a second restaurant in 1995. This one was named Moran's Restaurant and Café.
Moran's Restaurant and Café was also very popular. It even won an award for "best new restaurant" in 1995 from the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide.
Matt Moran also helps design meals for passengers on Singapore Airlines. He is part of their international cooking team.
TV Chef Star
Matt Moran is also well-known as a celebrity chef on television. He has been on many cooking shows.
He hosted a show called The Chopping Block, which started in 2008. This show ran for two seasons. In 2011, Matt joined the third season of MasterChef Australia as a judge, helping to decide who had the best dishes.
Matt also appeared in a TV show called Paddock to Plate. This show explored where food comes from. In 2015, Matt Moran and another famous chef, Maggie Beer, became the judges for The Great Australian Bake Off. This popular baking competition started airing in October of that year.
Family Life and Awards
Matt Moran is married to a lawyer named Sarah Hopkins. They have two children, a son and a daughter.
In June 2022, Matt Moran received a special award. He was named a Member of the Order of Australia. This honor was given to him for his important contributions to the tourism and hospitality industries, and for his work with charities.
