Matthew Raine facts for kids
Matthew Raine (1760–1811) was an important English schoolmaster and a church leader. He dedicated his life to education and religious service.
Early Life and Education
Matthew Raine was born on May 20, 1760, in a place called Gilling in Yorkshire, England. His father, also named Matthew Raine, was a church leader and a schoolmaster. His mother, Esther, was from Cumberland.
Matthew Raine learned a lot from his father. He later became a student at Charterhouse School in June 1772. He got into this famous school because the king nominated him, which was a special honor.
In 1778, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge, with a scholarship called an "exhibition." This helped him pay for his studies. He earned several degrees there: a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in 1782, a Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1785, and later higher degrees in divinity. He was very good at his studies, winning university prizes in 1783 and 1784. In 1784, he also became a "Fellow of Trinity," which is a special academic position at the college.
Career and Achievements
After finishing his studies, Matthew Raine worked as a tutor for a while. Then, on June 7, 1791, he became the headmaster of Charterhouse School. This was a very important job, and he stayed there until he passed away.
During his time as headmaster, he achieved many things:
- In 1803, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal Society. This is a group of very smart scientists and thinkers.
- In 1809, he became a preacher at Gray's Inn, which is a historic legal society in London.
- In July 1810, he was given the job of rector (another type of church leader) at Little Hallingbury in Essex.
Later Life and Legacy
Matthew Raine never married and passed away on September 17, 1811. He was buried in the chapel at Charterhouse School. A special stone and a wall monument were placed there to remember him.
He had a large collection of classical books, including some very rare ones. After his brother, Jonathan Raine, passed away, these books were given to the library at Trinity College, Cambridge. This was a valuable gift that helped future students. Matthew Raine also supported the Society of Schoolmasters, an organization that helps teachers. He published only two sermons during his lifetime.
