Early Career and First Big Wins
Matthias worked hard and started getting good results. His first time on the podium (finishing in the top three) at a World Cup race was in January 2013. This happened in a super-G race in Kitzbühel, Austria, a very famous and challenging ski resort.
Olympic Glory: Gold Medals and Records
Matthias Mayer became an Olympic champion at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He won the gold medal in the downhill race, which is the fastest event in alpine skiing. This made him the seventh Austrian skier to win downhill gold at the Olympics.
He continued his success at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. There, he won his second Olympic gold medal, this time in the super-G event.
At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China, Matthias showed his incredible talent again. He won a bronze medal in the downhill race. Even more impressively, he successfully defended his super-G title, winning his third Olympic gold medal. With three gold medals and one bronze, Matthias Mayer is Austria's most successful Olympic alpine skier ever!
Retirement from Skiing
On December 29, 2022, Matthias Mayer surprised everyone by announcing his retirement from ski racing. He was 32 years old at the time. He decided to stop just hours before a super-G race he was supposed to compete in. He ended his World Cup career with 11 victories and 45 times on the podium.
