Mauiloa was an important leader, known as a High Chief (or Alii), on the island of Maui in ancient Hawaii. People learned about him from old Hawaiian stories and chants. He might have been a real person, or perhaps a character from myths.
Mauiloa ruled over parts of western Maui. Many local chiefs in different areas supported him.
He lived around the same time as another important person named Laamaikahiki from the island of Kauai. The time from Mauiloa's rule until Kaulahea I's rule was likely a difficult period for Maui.
His name, Mauiloa, means "Great Maui" or "Magnificent Maui".
Mauiloa's Family and Rule
Mauiloa became a ruler when he was quite young. When he first started to lead, he had to fight many battles. These battles helped him show his power to the other local chiefs on Maui.
He was the son of High Chief Hanalaa. His mother was Chiefess Kapukapu.
Mauiloa married a woman named Kauhua. They had a son together named Alau. Alau later became the ruler after his father. Mauiloa also had a grandson named Kaheka.
We do not know who Kauhua's parents were.
