Alo of Maui facts for kids
In Hawaiian legends, Alo was a powerful High Chief who ruled the island of Maui. He was known as the king, or Moʻi, of Maui. Sometimes people called him Alau. He was born around the year 1186. We don't have any old objects or buildings (archaeological evidence) that prove he existed, but his story is told in old Hawaiian legends.
Alo: Ancient King of Maui
Alo is mentioned by Abraham Fornander, a person who was both a judge and someone who studied different cultures (an ethnologist). Fornander wrote down many Hawaiian legends and histories, which helps us learn about figures like Alo.
Alo's Family and Royal Line
Alo was the son of King Mauiloa, who ruled over the western part of Maui. His mother was named Kauhua.
Alo was also the grandson of Chief Hanalaʻa. He was the great-grandson of Palena, and the great-great-grandson of the mythical King Haho. His family line goes back even further to Paumakua of Maui, who was a legendary ancestor of the chiefs of Maui. Alo became the ruler of Maui after his father.
There are not many famous stories about Alo or his wife. In some old chants, his wife is called Moeiekana or Moekeaea. Alo had a son named Prince Kuhimana and a daughter named Kaumana I. Interestingly, Kuhimana and Kaumana I were twins, and they married each other. This kind of union was considered very special and sacred in ancient Hawaiian royalty.
Alo's son, Kuhimana, later became the King of Maui. Alo's grandson was the famous High Chief Kamaloohua.
