Maunabo barrio-pueblo is a special neighborhood in Maunabo. It's like the main downtown area for the whole Maunabo municipality in Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 317 people lived here.
In Puerto Rico, just like in Spain, each town has a central neighborhood called a pueblo. This pueblo always has a main square, the town hall, and a Catholic church. Every year, fun festivals called Fiestas patronales (patron saint festivals) are held in this central square.

The Heart of Maunabo: Central Plaza
The central plaza, or town square, is a very important place in Maunabo barrio-pueblo. It's where people gather for fun events and to socialize. You can find people there from morning until night.
Purpose of the Plaza
Spanish laws from the early 1800s, called the Laws of the Indies, explained how towns in Puerto Rico should be built. These laws said the plaza was "a good place for parties" (celebrations). They also said the square should be big enough for all the people living nearby.
Protecting Passersby
The Spanish rules also mentioned that streets near the plaza should have comfortable walkways. These walkways would protect people from the sun and rain. This made it easier for everyone to enjoy the town center.
The Church in the Plaza
Right across from the central plaza in Maunabo barrio-pueblo is a Roman Catholic church. It is called the Parroquia San Isidro Labrador.
History of Maunabo Pueblo
Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States after the Spanish–American War. This happened because of the Treaty of Paris of 1898.
Early Population Count
In 1899, the United States Department of War counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that 1,277 people lived in Maunabo Pueblo at that time.
Name Change Over Time
The neighborhood was simply called Pueblo for many years. However, starting with the 1990 U.S. Census, it began to be called "barrio-pueblo."
