History of Maunie
How Maunie Got Its Name
Maunie got its unique name from two women! It's a mix of the first names of Maude Sheridan and Jennie Pumphrey. These women were the wives of two of the first people to settle in the area.
A post office opened in Maunie in 1893. The village officially became a town in 1901.
A Difficult Day in 1929
On January 18, 1929, a tornado struck Maunie. Sadly, two children from the local school lost their lives that day.
Geography of Maunie
Maunie is located in eastern Illinois. It sits right along the Wabash River. This river forms the border between Illinois and Indiana.
The village covers a total area of about 0.16 square miles (0.41 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The population of Maunie has changed a lot over the years. In 1910, over 500 people lived there. The number of residents slowly went down over time. By 1990, the population was 119 people. It went up a bit to 177 in 2000, but then dropped to 91 people by 2020.
