Life of Sir Maurice
Maurice de Berkeley was born in 1218. His parents were Thomas de Berkeley and Joan de Somery. He married Isabel FitzRoy before July 1247. Isabel's father, Richard FitzRoy, was a son of King John of England.
A Knight and a Baron
Maurice became a knight before 1242, showing his skill in battle. He fought in wars against France. In 1243, he became the Baron de Berkeley after his father passed away. This meant he took charge of his family's lands and responsibilities.
Fighting for Change
Sir Maurice also fought in a war in North Wales. Later, in 1264, he joined a group of powerful nobles called the Barons. They were fighting against King Henry III in what was known as the Second Barons' War. This was a time when many nobles wanted more say in how the country was run.
Sir Maurice de Berkeley passed away on April 4, 1281. He was buried at St Augustine's Abbey in Bristol. His son, Thomas de Berkeley, continued the family line.
