Maurice Richard Povich (born January 17, 1939) is a famous American television host. He is best known for hosting the talk show Maury, which was on TV from 1991 to 2022.
Maury started his career as a reporter on the radio. Later, he hosted a popular talk show in Washington D.C. called Panorama. In the late 1980s, he became well-known across the country for hosting A Current Affair. This show shared news and celebrity stories. In 1991, he started his own show, The Maury Povich Show, which was later renamed Maury.

Early Life and School
Maury Povich was born on January 17, 1939, in Washington, D.C.. He grew up in a Jewish family. His father, Shirley Povich, was a famous sportswriter for Washington Post.
Maury went to Landon School and graduated in 1957. He then studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a degree in television journalism in 1962.
Maury's Career in Television
Starting in Radio and TV News (1962–1986)
After college, Maury Povich got his first job at a radio station in Washington. He worked as a reporter and helped with publicity. By 1966, he was a news reporter and sportscaster for a TV station called WTTG.
In 1967, he became a co-host of Panorama, a popular talk show. This show helped him become well-known. Maury then worked at several other TV stations in different cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. He often anchored news programs and hosted talk shows.
In 1980, he moved to Philadelphia to host a show called People Are Talking. After three years, he returned to Washington D.C. to host Panorama again and anchor the news.
Hosting A Current Affair (1986–1990)
In 1986, Maury Povich moved to New York to host A Current Affair. This show was a mix of news and entertainment. It often covered celebrity gossip but also shared interesting human-interest stories. People liked the show because it was both informative and fun. Maury hosted A Current Affair until 1990.
The Maury Povich Show and Maury (1991–2022)
In September 1991, Maury Povich started hosting The Maury Povich Show. This show was shown all over the country. In 1995, the mayor of New York City honored Maury for helping people learn about National Adoption Month.
In 1998, the show's name was changed to simply Maury. The show became very famous for a part called "Who's the Daddy?". In this segment, men would take DNA tests to find out if they were the father of a child, and the results were shown live on TV.
Maury also hosted a short-lived game show called Twenty One in 2000. In 2005, he co-hosted a weekend news show with his wife, Connie Chung, called Weekends with Maury and Connie. However, this show was canceled after a few months.
He also appeared as himself in TV shows like How I Met Your Mother and the movie Madea's Big Happy Family. In 2007, Maury started a newspaper and online news source called the Flathead Beacon in Montana, where he has a home.
Maury's Family Life
Maury Povich was married to Phyllis Minkoff from 1962 to 1979. They have two daughters named Susan Anne and Amy Joyce. Their daughter Amy is married to a doctor and author named David Agus.
In 1984, Maury married news anchor Connie Chung. They had met earlier while working at the same TV station. In 1995, Maury and Connie adopted a son named Matthew Jay Povich.
Maury believes that children do best when both parents are involved in their lives. This is why his show Maury often focused on paternity testing, hoping to help families connect.
Maury is a big fan of golf and has played since he was a child. He often plays in amateur tournaments.
