Max Berrú's Early Life and Music
Max Berrú was born in Cariamanga, a town in Loja Province, Ecuador, in 1942. When he was 20 years old, in 1962, he moved to Chile to study at university.
He studied to become a mechanical engineer. At the university, he met Jorge Coulon. After finishing his studies, Max worked as an engineer for two years. But he soon found his true passion was music.
Starting Inti-Illimani
Around 1967, Max and Jorge started playing Latin American music together. They were still students at the Universidad Técnica del Estado in Santiago, Chile. They decided to form a music group.
Max wanted the group's name to honor the culture and folk music of South America. This is how they came up with the name Inti-Illimani. "Inti" means "sun" in the Quechua language, and "Illimani" is a mountain in Bolivia. Later, other musicians joined their group. This helped them explore more musical styles.
Life After Inti-Illimani
Max Berrú was the first main singer for Inti-Illimani. Even after leaving the group in 1997, he sometimes sang with them at concerts.
Before he passed away, Max owned a restaurant in Santiago, Chile. He named it Mitad del Mundo, which means "Middle of the World." This name was a nod to his Ecuadorian roots, as the equator runs through Ecuador.
Max Berrú passed away in Santiago, Chile, on May 1, 2018.
