Max Bog is a very special place in North Somerset, England. It covers about 10.6 hectares, which is like 26 football fields! This area is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). It was officially named an SSSI in 1988 because of its unique plants and wildlife.

The North Somerset Council owns Max Bog. The Avon Wildlife Trust helps to manage it. They work hard to protect all the amazing wetland plants that grow there. Because it's such a sensitive area, you usually need a special permit to visit.

What Makes Max Bog Special?

Max Bog is home to many rare and interesting plants. One plant, the Marsh Helleborine, grows here and nowhere else in the entire Avon area. That makes it super unique!

Other special plants found here include the Lesser Butterfly-orchid and the Fragrant Orchid. These beautiful orchids are also very rare. They grow at Max Bog and only one other place in Avon.

You can also find other cool plants like Yellow rattle, Meadowsweet, and Meadow Thistle. These plants help make Max Bog a rich and diverse habitat.

Orchids and Insects

The bog is also important for its many different types of orchids. These include special hybrid orchids like D. × grandis and D. × hallii. In nearby fields, you might even spot the Narrow-leaved Marsh-orchid.

Besides plants, Max Bog is a great place for insects. It's home to many species of moths, grasshoppers, and dragonflys. These insects are a vital part of the bog's ecosystem. They help pollinate plants and provide food for other animals.
