After the PDP joined with other groups to form the Republican Party in 2012, she became its Secretary-General. She held this role until she stepped down in 2017.

Maya Jribi's Life and Political Journey

Early Life and Education

Maya Jribi's father was from Tatouine, and her mother was from Algeria. She grew up and went to school in Radès, Tunisia. Later, she studied biology at the University of Sfax from 1979 to 1983.

During her time at university, she became very active in student groups. She joined the student union, known as UGET, and the Tunisian League of Human Rights. This group worked to protect people's rights. She also wrote for newspapers like Erraï and Al Mawkif.

Starting Her Political Career

In 1983, Maya Jribi helped start a political group called the Progressive Socialist Rally. She co-founded it with Ahmed Najib Chebbi. This group later changed its name to the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

From 1986, she was an important member of the party's leadership team. On December 25, 2006, Maya Jribi was chosen to be the Secretary-General of the PDP. This was a big moment because she was the first woman to lead a political party in Tunisia.

Protests and Challenges

Maya Jribi was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in. From October 1 to 20, 2007, she and Najib Chebbi went on a hunger strike. This meant they stopped eating to protest. They were protesting because their party's main office in Tunis was forced to move. This protest caused serious health problems for her.

Elections and New Political Party

In October 2011, Maya Jribi led the PDP's list of candidates for the Constituent Assembly Elections in Ben Arous Governorate. The Constituent Assembly was a group of people chosen to write a new constitution for Tunisia. The PDP won one seat in Ben Arous.

On April 9, 2012, the PDP joined with other political parties to create the Republican Party. Maya Jribi became a leader of this new party. On November 22, she put herself forward to be the president of the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia. However, she was not chosen. Mustapha Ben Jaafar won the election with more votes.

Beliefs and Retirement

Maya Jribi was a strong supporter of feminism. This means she believed strongly in equal rights for women. She also had strong opinions on international issues.

In 2017, Maya Jribi announced that she was retiring from politics. She made this announcement at the Republican Party's meeting.
