Mayger is a small, quiet place in Columbia County, Oregon, United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the county.

Mayger is located right on the Columbia River, a very important river in the Pacific Northwest. Fishing has always been a big part of life for people living in Mayger.

The History of Mayger

Mayger was named after a man named Charles Mayger. He was from France and started a business there.

Mayger Logging Company

Charles Mayger owned a company called the Mayger Logging Company. Logging means cutting down trees for wood. This company was very important to the area. In 1886, Charles Mayger sold his logging company. William F. Slaughter bought the business from him.

The Post Office in Mayger

Three years after selling his company, in 1889, a post office was opened in Mayger. Charles Mayger became the very first postmaster. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office. This post office served the community for many years. However, it eventually closed down in 1961.

Mayger Today

Even though its own post office closed, Mayger still gets its mail. Today, the community is served by the post office in nearby Clatskanie, Oregon. Mayger remains a small, unincorporated community with a rich history tied to the Columbia River and the logging industry.
