The mayor of Portland is the official leader of the city of Portland, Maine, in the United States. The mayor helps run the city and represents its people. This article shares a list of the people who have been mayor of Portland.
History of Portland's Mayor
For many years, the city's leader was called the "mayor." But from 1923 to 1969, the position changed. The leader was then known as the "Chairman of the City Council." This person was chosen by the other members of the city council.
In 1969, the title "Mayor" came back. However, the mayor was still chosen by the city council members, not by a public vote.
Things changed again in 2011. For the first time since 1923, the people of Portland got to vote directly for their mayor. This means citizens now choose who leads their city. Since then, elections have been held in 2015, 2019, and 2023.
