The Maysville Historic District is a special area in Mobile, Alabama, United States. It's like a time capsule, showing how people lived and built homes long ago. This district covers about 451 acres. That's like 340 football fields!

It has 1121 important buildings and places. These are called "contributing properties." They help tell the story of Maysville. The district is southwest of downtown Mobile. It's also right next to another historic area, the Leinkauf Historic District.

Exploring Maysville's Past

Maysville was first planned out in 1871. This was during a tough economic time in Mobile. Because of this, the neighborhood didn't really start to grow until the late 1890s.

Maysville has always been a neighborhood for working families. Many people who lived here worked hard jobs. Their homes were built to be practical and comfortable.

How Maysville Grew

In the early 1900s, Mobile's economy changed. The Port of Mobile became very important. Shipyards there built and repaired many ships. This created lots of jobs.

More people moved to Mobile to work. Maysville grew quickly to house these new families. This growth continued through World War I and World War II.

Homes Through the Years

The houses in Maysville show how building styles changed over time.

Early Homes (Late 1800s - Early 1900s)

Many homes built in the late 1890s and early 1900s were smaller. They were often bungalows or cottages. Some had small touches of Victorian architecture. These homes were cozy and perfect for families.

A few larger, more decorative houses were built too. You can find these mostly in the northeastern part of the neighborhood.

Mid-Century Homes (Early 1900s - WWII)

As the 20th century began, new styles became popular. Many homes were built in the Craftsman-style. These bungalows often had wide porches and natural materials.

Another popular style was the American Foursquare. These houses were usually square-shaped with two stories. They were simple but strong.

Post-War Homes (After WWII)

After World War II, building styles changed again. Minimalist Traditional homes became common. These were simpler, without much decoration.

You can also find some ranch-style houses. These are usually one-story homes that spread out. They were very popular for families in the mid-1900s.

Important Buildings in Maysville

Two important buildings in the district are:

  • Ladd–Peebles Stadium: This large stadium was built in 1948. It's a well-known landmark in Mobile.
  • Williamson High School: This school was built in 1965. It has served many students in the community.

National Recognition

The Maysville Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. This means it's recognized as an important historical area in the United States. It helps protect the unique character and history of the neighborhood for future generations.
