History of the City
The city of McLendon-Chisholm started as two separate small communities. These were called McLendon and Chisholm. They eventually joined together to form one city.
The McLendon Community
The McLendon community began around 1870. It was named after a landowner named P.A. McLendon. He built a store, a cotton gin, and a blacksmith shop. These businesses stayed open until 1975.
A post office opened in McLendon in 1880. By 1896, about 150 people lived there. The post office closed in 1905. For many years in the early 1900s, the population stayed around 50 people.
The Chisholm Community
The land for the Chisholm community was first given to a veteran named King Latham in 1847. Later, Enoch Parson Chisholm and his brother B. Frank Chisholm bought land there in 1856. The community was named after them.
Enoch Chisholm bought more land a few years later. He started the Chisholm Methodist Church in 1871. The community of Chisholm was officially planned out in 1886.
In the same year, two local schools joined to form Berry Creek Academy. Chisholm's first store opened in 1890. A post office was set up in 1891. By 1898, Berry Creek Academy was the second-largest school in Rockwall County. It had 301 students.
The Chisholm post office closed in 1905. However, the community kept growing. In 1904, about 102 people lived there. The population reached its highest point around 1940 with about 200 residents. By the 1960s, the number dropped to about 167.
Becoming One City
On October 18, 1969, the two communities officially joined together. They became the city of McLendon-Chisholm. Residents wanted to protect their land and keep their rural way of life. This was the main reason they decided to become one city.
In the mid-1970s, the city had about 170 residents. This number quickly grew to 480 in the 1980s. By the 1990 census, 646 people lived there. By 2000, the population had increased to 914. This was a 41 percent increase from 1990.
