Many other hockey teams have called McMorran home. These include the Port Huron Flags (in different versions), Port Huron Wings, and Port Huron Border Cats. Other teams were the Port Huron Beacons, Port Huron IceHawks, and Port Huron Fighting Falcons.
What Can You See in the Arena?
The main arena can hold 2,200 people for ice hockey games. It also hosts indoor football games. For concerts, up to 4,800 people can watch their favorite bands. The playing area is about 85 feet by 185 feet. The arena also hosts many other events. These include conventions, circuses, and ice shows. Trade shows and banquets also take place here.
Famous Musicians Who Played at McMorran
Many big music stars have performed at McMorran Arena. Some of these famous musicians include Kiss, Aerosmith, and Ted Nugent. Other bands like Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Rush, and Ozzy Osbourne have also played here. Even country legend Johnny Cash performed on its stage.
Recent Upgrades to the Arena
In 2019, the arena got a big upgrade. It received 3,000 new seats from the old Palace of Auburn Hills. These new padded seats replaced the original wooden ones. The city also improved the sound and electrical systems in the theater. New carpeting and signs were added too. There are plans to create an outdoor ice rink and gathering space. This will be on the plaza east of the building.
The SC4 Fieldhouse (Formerly the Pavilion)
The building next to the arena used to be called the Pavilion. It had 25,000 square feet of space. This space was used for sports, trade shows, and meetings. In 2016, the city sold the Pavilion. St. Clair County Community College bought it for just $1.
What is the Fieldhouse Used For Now?
The college renovated the building. It reopened in October 2016 as the SC4 Fieldhouse. It is now home to the college's sports teams. The Fieldhouse is also available for community use. It hosts tournaments, showcases, and sports camps.
The Observation Tower
Attached to the Fieldhouse is a tall, eight-sided tower. At the very top, there's an observation deck. Visitors can climb 188 steps to reach the top. From there, you can see amazing views of the whole area. New lights were added to the tower's outside in 2016.
The McMorran Theatre
The McMorran complex also has a beautiful theater. It has 1,157 seats. The theater is used for Broadway shows, movies, and concerts. It's also great for other stage events. The theater has excellent sound and clear views from every seat. It was also designed by Alden B. Dow. The International Symphony Orchestra performs here. The Port Huron Civic Theatre also calls it home.
Art Outside the Theatre
The outside east wall of the complex has a large clock. It is 22 feet wide and made of gold-colored aluminum. It sits among limestone panels. Behind the clock is the Night and Day Fountain. Both the clock and the fountain were created by sculptor Marshall Fredericks.
