Meall a' Bhuachaille is a cool mountain located in the Cairngorms area of Scotland. It stands tall at 810 meters (about 2,657 feet) above sea level. This mountain is found about 10 kilometers (6 miles) east of a town called Aviemore. It's also just north of Loch Morlich and the beautiful Glenmore Forest. The name "Meall a' Bhuachaille" comes from Gaelic and means "Mound of the herdsman."

Hiking to the Top

If you love hiking, Meall a' Bhuachaille offers some exciting paths to its summit. The most popular way to reach the top starts near Loch Morlich.

Popular Paths

  • Loch Morlich Route: This path takes you through a lovely forest first. Then, it leads you onto the open moorland. You'll walk up to a pass between Meall a' Bhuachaille and another peak called Creagan Gorm. From there, it's a climb to the very top!
  • Ryvoan Pass Route: Another way to go is through the scenic Ryvoan Pass. You'll pass by a pretty green lochan (a small lake) called An Lochan Uaine. This route leads to a small shelter known as a bothy. From the bothy, a path heads west, taking you up Meall a' Bhuachaille.

Combining Peaks

Some hikers like to make their adventure even bigger. They combine climbing Meall a' Bhuachaille with reaching the tops of nearby mountains. These include Creagan Gorm and Craiggowrie. These three peaks form a ridge to the west, offering a longer and more challenging hike.

The current route for the Meall a' Bhuachaille hill race begins and ends at the Badaguish Outdoor Centre. In the past, the race used to start from Glenmore Lodge. It's an exciting event for runners who enjoy a real mountain challenge!
