Measle and the Wrathmonk is an exciting children's fantasy novel. It was written by Ian Ogilvy and has cool illustrations by Chris Mould. The book first came out in 2004. It was published by Oxford University Press in the UK and HarperCollins in the US.

This book won the Georgia Children's Book Award. It has been translated into at least seven different languages. There are even plans to make it into a movie! The first version of the book had a bright green cover. The author said it smelled like a beach ball. He thought it was the brightest book in the whole store! In 2010, the book was re-released with a new title: The Train Set of Terror!

Measle's Big Adventure

This story is about a 10-year-old boy named Measle. He lives with his mean guardian, Basil Tramplebone. Measle's life is very boring and unhappy. Basil has a super detailed train set. He built it using money that was meant for Measle. Measle can only watch Basil play with it.

One day, Measle really wants to play with the train set. He tricks Basil into leaving the house. Measle tells him there's extra money at the bank. But his plan goes wrong! Basil comes home and catches Measle playing with the train set. Basil gets very angry. He uses magic to shrink Measle! Then he puts Measle right into the train set.

Inside the train set, Measle meets Frank. Frank is the electrician who wired the train set. But Frank is all plastic, except for his mouth! Measle gives Frank a piece of carrot. This makes Frank turn back into a human. Frank tells Measle that Basil's glazed-donut crumbs and lemonade turn people into plastic.

Together, Measle and Frank start a rescue mission. They save other people Basil has shrunk. These include Prudence, who studies wrathmonks. They also rescue William, an encyclopedia salesman. Kitty, a Brownie scout, and Lady Grant, a town official, are also saved. Finally, they rescue Kip, the carpenter who built the train set table.

Main Characters in the Story

Meet Measle Stubbs

Measle Stubbs is the main character. He is a thin 10-year-old boy. He is called 'Measle' because wrathmonks like to confuse people. They do this by mixing up words. Later, he finds out his real name is Sam Lee. But he still likes being called Measle.

Basil Tramplebone, the Villain

Basil Tramplebone is the bad guy. He is a "wrathmonk." A wrathmonk is a warlock who has gone crazy. Basil is Measle's legal guardian. He also wants to get the money Measle is supposed to inherit. This money was left by Measle's "dead" parents. Basil is described as tall and thin. He has black hair that he keeps in place with shoe polish. Measle says Basil never lies.

Griswold Gristle, the Bank Manager

Griswold Gristle is a bank manager. He helps Basil try to get Measle's money. He looks and talks a lot like Basil. Later books show that he is also a wrathmonk.

Frank Hunter, the Electrician

Frank Hunter is an electrician. He ate some of Basil's lemonade and doughnuts. This turned him into plastic. Measle helps him turn back to normal.

Lady Grant, the Town Official

Lady Grant is one of Basil's victims. She is a borough councillor from town hall. She tried to make Basil fix his house. This made Basil mad, so he shrunk her. She often uses the word 'revolting'.

William O. Durham, the Salesman

William O. Durham is another victim of Basil. He is a traveling salesman. He tried to sell Basil expensive encyclopedias. Basil got angry when William's foot got caught in the door. So, William was shrunk. He often tells jokes that no one finds funny.

Kitty Webb, the Brave Scout

Kitty Webb is also a victim of Basil. She was a girl scout selling cookies. Basil's scary look made her try to run away. But Basil caught her and shrunk her. She is often scared, but she can be very brave.

Kip Lovell, the Carpenter

Kip Lovell is a carpenter. He made a table for Basil. But Basil was not happy with it, so Kip was shrunk. Kip had been shrunk the longest. This meant he was almost completely plastic.

Prudence Preyer, the Wrathmonkologist

Prudence Preyer studies wrathmonks. She was spying on Basil for six months. But one day, her dog, Tinker, barked. This made Basil notice them, and Prudence was caught and shrunk.

Measle's Parents

Sam Stubbs is Measle's dad. He is a powerful wizard. Lee Stubbs is Measle's mum. She is a "manafount." This means she has an endless supply of mana. Mana is what magicians use for spells. Her husband can use her mana by holding her hand.
