Mechanicsburg, also known as Mechanicsville, is a small community in West Virginia, United States. It's located in Hampshire County. This community sits along a historic road called the Northwestern Turnpike, which is also known as U.S. Route 50. You can find Mechanicsburg west of the town of Romney, right at a spot called Mill Creek Gap. Sometimes this area is also called Mechanicsburg Gap.

Discovering Mechanicsburg

Mechanicsburg is an "unincorporated community." This means it doesn't have its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's part of the larger county. Even without its own city government, Mechanicsburg has a lot of interesting history and unique features.

A Glimpse into History

One of the most famous places in Mechanicsburg is a building known as "The Burg." This historic building was constructed a very long time ago, around the year 1769. "The Burg" played an important role during the American Civil War. Both the Union (Northern) and Confederate (Southern) armies used it as a headquarters at different times during the conflict. Imagine soldiers from both sides staying in the same building, just at different points in history!

Nearby, along Fox Hollow Road, you can find more historical sites. This road is also known as County Route 50/4. Here, you'll discover the 19th-century Fox's Hollow Baptist Church. This old church stands as a reminder of the community's past. You can also find the old Mechanicsburg School, which once served the children of the area.

Modern Mechanicsburg

Today, the Fox's Hollow area of Mechanicsburg is seeing new growth. There are new homes being built, creating a larger residential area. One of these new developments is called Silver Leaf. This community offers large lots, some as big as five or ten acres, often surrounded by woods. This shows how Mechanicsburg is growing and changing while still keeping its connection to nature.
