History of MediaMarkt
How MediaMarkt Started
MediaMarkt was started by four people: Leopold Stiefel, Walter Gunz, Erich Kellerhals, and Helga Kellerhals. Their very first store opened in Munich, Germany, on November 24, 1979. By 1985, they had opened nine more stores, all close to Munich.
Growing Bigger and Joining Forces
In 1988, a company called Kaufhof Warenhaus AG bought a large part of MediaMarkt's parent company. This helped MediaMarkt start opening stores in other countries in 1989. In 1990, MediaMarkt took over another electronics store chain called Saturn. Later, in 1996, several big companies, including Kaufhof, joined together to form a new company called Metro AG. MediaMarkt and Saturn then became part of Metro AG, but they still kept their own brand names.
International Expansion and Changes
MediaMarkt tried to expand into China in 2010, opening a store in Shanghai. They opened six more stores there with a partner company. However, MediaMarkt decided to leave China in 2013.
In 2017, MediaMarkt and Saturn became part of a new company called Ceconomy. Ceconomy was created when it separated from Metro Group. Ceconomy also bought a part of a French company called Fnac Darty in 2017. In 2018, Ceconomy sold its stores in Russia to a Russian company called M.video.
Recent Store Changes
In 2023, MediaMarkt sold its stores in three countries. In Portugal, 10 stores were sold to the French company Fnac. In Sweden, 29 stores were sold to Power International. In Greece, the remaining part of its 13 stores was sold to Public Group.
How MediaMarkt Works
MediaMarkt launched its online shopping website in Germany in January 2012. This allowed customers to buy electronics from home.
In Italy, MediaMarkt stores are known by a different name: MediaWorld.
Store Management Model
Each MediaMarkt store is partly owned by its manager. This means store managers have a say in what products to sell, how to price them, and how to manage their staff.
