Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center is a large hospital in Macon, Georgia. It has 637 beds for patients. This hospital is part of a bigger healthcare system called Atrium Health.

It is the second-largest hospital in the state of Georgia. The hospital also helps teach new doctors and nurses. It works with Mercer University School of Medicine and other nursing schools. The Medical Center helps people in 30 counties across central and southern Georgia. This area has about 750,000 people.

The hospital's emergency medical services (EMS) team helps people in five counties. These counties are Baldwin, Bibb, Jones, Treutlen, and Twiggs. Right next to this hospital is the Beverly Knight Olson Children's Hospital.

In 2018, Navicent Health joined with Atrium Health. Atrium Health is a healthcare system based in North Carolina.

The hospital first opened in March 1895. Back then, it was known as the Macon Hospital. An Atlanta doctor named Olin Weaver was its first leader. In 1915, the city of Macon took over the hospital.

Name Changes Over Time

In 1960, the hospital became a member of the American Hospital Association. This is a group that helps hospitals work better. Eleven years later, in 1971, its name changed to The Medical Center of Central Georgia.

On September 3, 2014, the healthcare system changed its name again. It became Navicent Health. This new name helped connect all the different parts of the health system. Navicent Health includes several hospitals and services. These include the Rehabilitation Hospital and the Beverly Knight Olson Children's Hospital.

Joining Atrium Health

On February 8, 2018, it was announced that Navicent Health would join Atrium Health. Atrium Health is a large healthcare system from North Carolina. On December 20, 2018, they signed an agreement. This made Atrium Health the main controlling group.

Atrium Health Navicent The Medical Center is a major teaching hospital. It is also a Level 1 Trauma Center. This means it can handle the most serious injuries. The hospital serves a large area with almost 750,000 people.

The hospital has over 4,500 employees. It also has about 700 doctors. As the second-largest hospital in Georgia, it has 637 beds. These beds are for children, general medical care, and serious injuries. They also help with heart surgeries.

The Emergency Center has a helipad. This allows helicopters to land with patients. The center and its three urgent care clinics see over 140,000 visitors each year. The hospital also offers many services outside of the main building. These include check-ups, basic care, and rehabilitation services.

Teaching Future Doctors

The Medical Center is the main teaching hospital for Mercer University School of Medicine. It has programs for over 100 doctors who are still training. It also works with many other universities. These partnerships help train students in healthcare.
