What Was Medina?
Medina was one of two main local government areas on the Isle of Wight. It was responsible for managing local services. These services included things like housing, planning, and environmental health for the people living there. It was like a local council for a specific part of the island.
How Medina Was Formed
Medina was created because of a law called the Local Government Act 1972. This law changed how local areas were managed across England. Medina was formed by joining together three smaller areas. These were the towns of Newport and Ryde. It also included the "urban district" of Cowes, which is a smaller town area. Medina started operating in 1974. The other district created on the island at the same time was called South Wight.
Where Did the Name Medina Come From?
The name "Medina" is quite old. It was an earlier name for the town of Newport. Today, this old name is still used for the River Medina. This river flows through the Isle of Wight.
Why Medina Changed
Medina stopped being a separate borough on April 1, 1995. This happened after a group called the Local Government Commission for England reviewed how local areas were run. They decided to make things simpler on the Isle of Wight. Instead of having two separate districts (Medina and South Wight) and a county council, they created one single council. This new council was called the Isle of Wight Council. It took over all the responsibilities of the older councils.
