After her parents divorced when she was three, Meg was raised by her mother and stepfather in rural Texada Island, British Columbia, Canada. When she was 12, Meg started taking dance lessons. This helped her find a passion and a way to cope with a difficult home life. She quickly became a very skilled ballerina.
Meg attended high school in both Esquimalt, British Columbia, and Seattle, Washington. After graduating, she moved to the United States to become a professional dancer. She studied in New York City and joined the Connecticut Ballet Company. Meg even appeared as a dancer in the 1980 musical film Fame. However, a serious back injury in 1979 stopped her dance career.
