Megalibgwilia is a type of echidna that lived a very long time ago. We only know about it from fossils found in Australia. This ancient animal is special because it includes the oldest known echidna species ever discovered!

What is Megalibgwilia?
Megalibgwilia was a genus, which is a group of closely related species. It was a type of monotreme, just like modern echidnas and platypuses. Monotremes are unique mammals because they lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.
An Ancient Echidna
Modern echidnas are spiny, ant-eating mammals. They have long snouts and strong claws for digging. Megalibgwilia was similar to these echidnas but lived millions of years ago. Scientists believe it might have been larger than today's echidnas.
There are two known species of Megalibgwilia:
- M. ramsayi
- M. robusta
These names come from the scientists who first described them.
Where and When Did It Live?
Megalibgwilia lived only in Australia. Its fossils have been found across different parts of the continent. This shows it was likely widespread during its time.
This ancient echidna lived during two very long periods in Earth's history. These periods are called the Miocene and the Pleistocene epochs.
The Miocene Epoch
The Miocene epoch lasted from about 23 million to 5.3 million years ago. During this time, Australia was warmer and wetter than it is today. There were large forests and many different animals. Megalibgwilia first appeared during this epoch.
The Pleistocene Epoch
The Pleistocene epoch followed the Miocene. It lasted from about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. This period is famous for its many ice ages. Giant animals, known as megafauna, roamed Australia. Megalibgwilia continued to live during parts of this time. It eventually became extinct before the end of the Pleistocene.

We know about Megalibgwilia because of its fossils. Fossils are the preserved remains or traces of ancient life. Scientists have found bones and other parts of Megalibgwilia.
