Mehama is a small community in Marion County, Oregon, in the United States. It is not an official city but is known as an unincorporated area. This means it doesn't have its own local government like a city does.

Mehama is located right on Oregon Route 22 and next to the North Santiam River. For official counting purposes, the United States Census Bureau calls Mehama a census-designated place (CDP). This helps them collect information about the people living there. In 2020, about 317 people lived in Mehama. It is also part of the larger Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area.

You can find Mehama just one mile (about 1.6 kilometers) north of Lyons, right across the North Santiam River. It is also the end point of Oregon Route 226.

History of Mehama

Mehama got its name from the wife of an early settler named James X. Smith. Mr. Smith was important to the area's early days. He helped plan the town and also ran a ferry service across the North Santiam River.

A post office was first set up in Mehama in 1877. At first, it was accidentally called "Mehamah," but the name was quickly changed to "Mehama" by 1881.
