Original Name: Moore's Ordinary

Meherrin was first called Moore's Ordinary. This name came from George Moore in August 1748. He received a special license to run an "ordinary" tavern. An ordinary tavern was a place that offered basic needs for travelers, like food and a place to rest.

The Meherrin Depot

In 1852, a railroad line reached the community. This was the Richmond-Danville railroad. They built a train station called the Meherrin Depot. The depot was named after the Meherrin tribe of Native Americans. This tribe used to live in the area and along the Meherrin River.
