Mei-Chu Chang is a talented mathematician. She works in two important areas of math: algebraic geometry and combinatorial number theory.
Learning and Degrees
Mei-Chu Chang started her college studies in Taiwan. She earned her first degree, a Bachelor of Science (BS), from National Taiwan University.
Later, she moved to the United States for her advanced studies. She attended the University of California, Berkeley. There, she worked with her professor, Robin Hartshorne. In 1982, she earned her PhD, which is a very high degree in academics. Her special research paper, called a dissertation, was about complex math topics.
Career and Research
After getting her PhD, Dr. Chang began her career. She worked at the California Institute of Technology as a research instructor. Then, she became an assistant professor at the University of Michigan and the University of South Carolina.
In 1987, she joined the University of California, Riverside as an associate professor. She became a full professor there in 1991. Professor Chang has also been a visiting researcher in many countries. These include Sweden, Korea, and Italy. She also visited famous research centers like the IHES in Paris and the IAS in Princeton.
One of her most important research works is called A polynomial bound in Freiman's theorem. In this work, Professor Chang found new ways to understand Freiman's inverse theorem. This theorem helps mathematicians understand how numbers behave in certain patterns.
Awards and Recognition
Mei-Chu Chang has received several honors for her work. In 2017, she was chosen as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This is a special title given to mathematicians who have made big contributions. She was recognized for her work in different math fields. These include arithmetic combinatorics, analytic number theory, and algebraic geometry.
In 2009, she was invited to give a main speech at a big math conference. This was the 9th International Conference on Finite Fields and Applications. It took place in Dublin, Ireland.
