Meijel (pronounced like MY-el) is a small village in the southeastern part of the Netherlands. It used to be its own municipality, which is like a local government area. Now, it is part of a larger municipality called Peel en Maas.
History of Meijel
Meijel was first mentioned in old writings in 1303. Its name might mean "middle of the forest." The village grew on a sandy ridge in the Peel area. This area used to be a large raised bog, which is a type of wetland.
Meijel was once a special independent area called a heerlijkheid. This meant it had its own local rule and was not part of a larger feudal system. In 1716, it became part of a region controlled by Austria.
St. Nicolaas Church
The St. Nicolaas Church is a Catholic church in Meijel. It has three aisles and a wide tower. The original church was destroyed during World War II in 1944. The current church was built between 1953 and 1955.
Meijel in Modern Times
In 1840, about 996 people lived in Meijel. The village suffered a lot of damage during World War II. Meijel was an independent municipality until 2010. That year, it joined with other villages to form the larger municipality of Peel en Maas.
