Melonie Diaz (born April 25, 1984) is an American actress. She has starred in many movies made by independent film companies. Some of these movies were even shown at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, a famous film event.
Melonie was nominated for Independent Spirit Awards for her roles in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006) and Fruitvale Station (2013). From 2018 to 2022, she played a main character named Mel Vera in the TV series Charmed on The CW network.

Early Life and Education
Melonie Diaz was born in New York City. She grew up with her older sister in an area called the Lower East Side, which is also known as "Loisaida." Her parents are from Puerto Rico.
Melonie became interested in acting at a community center called the Henry Street Settlement. She later went to the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan.
She also studied Film Production at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. While studying, she acted in many plays and workshops outside of the main Broadway theaters.
Acting Career Highlights
Melonie started her movie career with a small role in Double Whammy in 2001. After that, she got parts in movies like From an Objective Point of View and Raising Victor Vargas (both 2002). She also appeared in a TV show called Law & Order in 2003.
Breakthrough Roles in Film
Her big break came when she played Blanca in Lords of Dogtown (2005). She also played Laurie in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints (2006). For this role, she was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female.
After these roles, she starred as Anna in Itty Bitty Titty Committee (2007). She also appeared in movies like Hamlet 2, Be Kind Rewind, and American Son in 2008.
In 2010, she was featured in the music video for "We Got Hood Love" by Mary J. Blige.
Fruitvale Station and Recognition
In 2012, Melonie starred in a romantic comedy called She Wants Me. The next year, in 2013, she appeared in Fruitvale Station. This movie was based on the true story of Oscar Grant.
Fruitvale Station was a big success at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. It won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. It also won an award at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Melonie was nominated for another Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Female for her work in this film.
Melonie has said she wants to go back to Tisch to finish her filmmaking degree. She looks up to director Kathryn Bigelow.
Television and Recent Work
In 2014, she had a brief role in an episode of the TV series Girls. That same year, she appeared in the films X/Y with America Ferrera and The Cobbler with Adam Sandler.
In February 2018, Melonie was chosen for a main role in The CW's fantasy drama series Charmed. This show is a new version of the original 1998 series. In the show, Melonie plays Mel Vera, one of three sisters who discover they are witches.
Diaz also co-starred in the movie The First Purge, which came out in 2018. This film is a prequel (a story set before an earlier one) to The Purge movie series.
Personal Life
Melonie Diaz is married to singer Octavio Genera. They got married during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2021, she announced that she was expecting their first child. Their daughter was born on July 20, 2021.
