Melvin Parker (born June 7, 1944 – died December 3, 2021) was an American drummer. He and his brother, saxophonist Maceo Parker, were very important members of James Brown's band. James Brown was a famous musician known as the "Godfather of Soul."

Melvin Parker's Early Life and Music Career

Melvin Parker was born in Kinston, North Carolina. This was on June 7, 1944. His unique drumming style was a big part of how James Brown created his new "funk" music in the 1960s. Funk music is a type of music that makes you want to dance, with a strong beat.

In 1964 and 1965, Melvin Parker played drums on three of James Brown's most famous songs. These songs were "Out of Sight," "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," and "I Got You (I Feel Good)." These songs became very popular.

James Brown himself praised Melvin Parker's drumming. In 2004, Brown said that Melvin Parker was the best drummer he ever had. He mentioned how nobody else could play like Melvin on songs like "I Feel Good." Brown even compared Parker's drumming to a metronome, which is a device that keeps perfect time. This shows how steady and precise Melvin Parker's drumming was.

Joining and Leaving James Brown's Band

Melvin Parker's first time playing with James Brown's band ended in the mid-1960s. He was called to serve in the military. After he left, two other drummers, Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks, took his place.

Parker came back to James Brown's band in 1969. He played on an album called .... In 1970, Melvin Parker and other band members decided to leave James Brown's band.

After leaving James Brown, Parker joined his brother Maceo's band. This band was called Maceo & All the King's Men. He briefly rejoined James Brown's band again in 1976. During this time, he played on the hit song "Get Up Offa That Thing." Melvin Parker passed away on December 3, 2021.
