Melvin X (born Melvin Bishop Williams; died June 22, 1970) was an important student leader. He helped start the Black Student Union at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). This group worked to support black students on campus.
Early Life
Melvin Bishop Williams was born in Texas. When he was young, his family moved to Richmond, California. Later, at age 11, he moved to Los Angeles. He went to Fremont High School before attending UCLA for college.
College and Student Activism
Melvin X attended UCLA during an important time for civil rights. In 1966, he and some black athletes at UCLA started the Black Student Union (BSU). This group was created to speak up for the needs of black students. Melvin even served as the club's president for a while.
Melvin believed the BSU was a way to bring forward the demands of black students. They wanted better conditions on campus for students of color. This included getting rid of unfair treatment, especially from teachers and staff. His friends respected him for his strong beliefs and courage.
Around 1965, Melvin joined the Organization of Afro-American Unity. He believed that African Americans needed to fight for their civil and political rights. He once said that freedom would come through strong action.
In the late 1960s, he was also known for writing "Revolution NOW" and other powerful messages on walls in his neighborhood. In 1969, Melvin became the father of twin sons.
Afrikan Student Union at UCLA
The Black Student Union at UCLA was formed in 1966. Its goal was to support all UCLA students of African descent. The idea for the group came from African-American student athletes. It was shaped by the national Civil Rights Movement, the 1965 Watts riots, and the local Black Power movement. This movement grew after the death of Malcolm X.
Over time, the organization changed its name several times. It was called the Black Student Alliance and eventually the Afrikan Student Union. This happened when it joined with about 30 other student groups on the UCLA campus.
Death
Melvin X died on June 6, 1970, near Mira Loma, California. He was found on June 7 in a car. The car was parked at an abandoned farm. It contained many writings about black activism.
An investigation began into his death. In October 1970, a man named Marion Alexander Gay was arrested. However, the charges against him were later dropped. Other people were questioned, but no useful information was found. The person responsible for Melvin X's death was never found.
