A Look at History
Early Days and Name Change
The land where Mira Loma is located was originally part of a large area called Rancho Jurupa. This land was given by the Mexican government to a person named Juan Bandini in 1838.
Mira Loma was first known as Wineville. It is located in what is now called the "Jurupa" area of Riverside County. The Santa Ana River separates it from the city of Riverside to the south. To the north and west, it borders the Ontario and Fontana areas in San Bernardino County. To the east, it borders Pedley and Glen Avon.
The community officially changed its name from Wineville to Mira Loma on November 1, 1930. This change happened because of the negative attention from the Wineville Chicken Coop murders. The people wanted a new name to represent a new beginning.
Joining the City of Jurupa Valley
On March 8, 2011, the people living in Mira Loma and nearby communities voted on something called Measure A. Most people, about 54%, voted "YES." This vote meant that Mira Loma, along with Pedley, Rubidoux, Glen Avon, and Sunnyslope, would all become part of a new city.
This new city was named Jurupa Valley. The official date when Jurupa Valley became a city was July 1, 2011.
