Discovering Memorial Park's History
How the Park Started
Memorial Park was once a showground. A local group bought the land in 1918. Two brothers, Donald and Robert Cameron, helped get the land. The park was named "Cameron and Soldiers' Park" to remember their family. It also honored their relative, Lieutenant Norman Cameron, who sadly died in a big battle called Gallipoli.
Changes Over the Years
In 1934, a strong storm blew away the park's main building, called the grandstand. Later, during World War II, the New Zealand Army used the park. It was a busy place for soldiers.
In 2008, the park got a new name: Trust House Memorial Park. This was because of a sponsorship deal. Then, in 2015, the park had a big makeover. It cost about 2.1 million New Zealand dollars. They added a new playing surface, bright stadium lights, and improved fences and paths.
Who Plays at Memorial Park?
