Menno Meyjes (born in 1954) is a talented Dutch screenwriter, film director, and producer. Life and Career
Menno Meyjes was born in Bloemendaal, a town in North Holland, Netherlands, in 1954. When he was 18, in 1972, he moved to the United States. He studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and earned a master's degree in 1980.
Early Film Work
Menno Meyjes first became well-known for a script he wrote called The Children's Crusade. This script was later turned into the 1987 movie Lionheart, produced by famous director Francis Ford Coppola.
His first movie script that was actually made into a film was for The Color Purple in 1985. This movie was directed by Steven Spielberg and was based on a popular book by Alice Walker. For his work on The Color Purple, Menno Meyjes was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award. These are two of the biggest awards in the film industry!
Working with Steven Spielberg
Menno Meyjes worked with Steven Spielberg again on other projects. He helped improve the script for the 1987 movie Empire of the Sun. He also helped write the story for the exciting adventure film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 1989. That same year, he won a Goya Award for writing the Spanish movie Twisted Obsession.
Directing Films
In 2002, Menno Meyjes not only wrote the film Max but also directed it. This was his first time directing a movie. He has since directed other films, including Martian Child (2007) and The Dinner (2013). The Dinner was based on a Dutch book and was filmed in Dutch, keeping the original language of the story.
