About Menno Meyjes
Menno Meyjes was born in a place called Bloemendaal in the North Holland region of the Netherlands in 1954. When he was 18, in 1972, he moved to the United States. There, he studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and earned a special degree in 1980. In 1984, he helped start a magazine about graphic design called Emigre. He created it with two other Dutch friends, Marc Susan and Rudy VanderLans.
Early Career and Big Movies
Menno Meyjes first became well-known for a movie idea he wrote called The Children's Crusade. This idea later became the 1987 movie Lionheart, produced by the famous Francis Ford Coppola.
His very first movie script that was actually made into a film was for The Color Purple in 1985. This movie was directed by Steven Spielberg. It was based on a book by Alice Walker from 1982. For his amazing work on this script, Menno Meyjes was nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award. These are two of the biggest awards in the film world!
Working with Steven Spielberg
Menno Meyjes worked with Steven Spielberg again on other projects. He helped improve the script for the movie Empire of the Sun in 1987. Then, in 1989, he helped write the story for the popular adventure film Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. In the same year, he won a Goya Award for writing a Spanish movie called Twisted Obsession.
Directing His Own Films
In 2002, Menno Meyjes not only wrote but also directed a movie called Max. This was his first time directing a full movie. Later, in 2012, he turned a Dutch book called "The Dinner" into a movie. He kept the movie in the Dutch language, just like the original book.
