A Look Back: Mentor-on-the-Lake's Story
Mentor-on-the-Lake started as part of a bigger area called Mentor Township. It officially became a village on October 22, 1924.
In 1970, the U.S. Census counted over 5,000 people living there. Because of this, it officially became an incorporated city on February 12, 1971. This means it gained more control over its own local government.
Much of the land in Mentor-on-the-Lake was once part of a large property. This property was called the Dickey-Moore tract. It stretched far south, even past U.S. Route 20 in the city of Mentor. A small part of this old land is still around today. It's called Mooreland and is now home to Lakeland Community College.
Mentor-on-the-Lake shares many services with its neighbor, the city of Mentor. This includes things like postal service.

The population of Mentor-on-the-Lake has changed over the years. In 1930, only 230 people lived there. By 1970, the population had grown to 6,517. It reached its highest point in 1990 with 8,271 residents. In 2020, the population was 7,131 people.

The 2010 census counted 7,443 people in the city. These people lived in 3,197 households. About 2,012 of these households were families.

Learning in Mentor-on-the-Lake
Students living in Mentor-on-the-Lake attend schools in the Mentor Public Schools district. Most younger students go to Lake Elementary School. Some others attend Orchard Hollow Elementary School.
For middle school, almost all students go to Shore Middle School. A small number of students might go to Memorial Middle School. All high school students from Mentor-on-the-Lake attend Mentor High School.
