History
When Mercer Mall first opened in 1980, it had several big stores. These included Sears, J. C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, Stone & Thomas, and Leggett. Leggett later became Belk.
Over the years, some stores changed. Montgomery Ward closed in 1987. That space then became a store called Hills. In 1999, Ames took over the Hills store.
Another store, Stone & Thomas, was sold to Elder-Beerman in 1998. However, Elder-Beerman decided not to open a store in Bluefield. Instead, Belk bought that space. They used it for men's clothes and home items.
After Ames closed in 2000, the space became Carolina Pottery. This store closed in 2006 and was replaced by Steve & Barry's. When Steve & Barry's closed, Roses opened in that spot in 2009.
Later, the second Belk store closed. This space became a Hobby Lobby in 2014. Also in 2014, Sears announced that its Mercer Mall store would close. Finally, Rural King opened in the old Sears space on February 18, 2017.
