Merge in Takapuna facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Merge in Takapuna is a very tall building planned for Takapuna, a town in New Zealand. It's called a "mixed-use development" because it will have many different things inside, like homes, offices, shops, and even a big car park.

This building is planned to be about 100 meters tall. That's like standing on top of a 30-story building! It will be one of the tallest buildings in Takapuna, almost as tall as the Sentinel tower nearby.

What is the Merge Building?

The name "Merge" comes from how the building will combine many different uses. It's designed to be a place where people can live, work, shop, and park their cars all in one spot.

Homes and Offices

The top part of the building will be a tall tower with about 30 floors. These floors will have around 110 apartments where people can live. Below the apartments, there will be four large floors for offices. These offices will have amazing 360-degree views of the city and the harbour.

Shops and Parking

On the ground floor, you'll find shops and restaurants. This will make the building a lively place for everyone. Below the shops, there will be a huge car park with several levels.

Public Car Park

A big part of the Merge building is a public car park. This car park will have space for 750 cars and is being built for the local City Council. It's an important part of the Council's plan to help people find parking in Takapuna.

Project Costs

The public car park alone is expected to cost about NZ$30 million. The developers bought the land for NZ$12.5 million. This land used to be called the 'Gasometer' and is located at the corner of Auburn Street and Huron Street. The total cost for the entire Merge building project is estimated to be around NZ$200 million.

Project Timeline

The Merge in Takapuna project faced some delays because of a big economic problem around the world called the Global Financial Crisis.

Getting Approval

In the middle of 2010, the project moved forward to get official approval. By late 2010, the necessary permission was granted. The people developing the building hoped to start construction in 2011. However, some people thought the time wasn't right for such a big project because of the economy.
