Discovering Merrill's Past

Merrill was named in 1872. It got its name from Samuel Merrill, who was the seventh Governor of Iowa. The city officially became an incorporated city on April 24, 1894. This means it gained its own local government.

In 2007, students from Drake University helped the city. They researched ways to attract new people to live in Merrill.

Merrill is found at coordinates 42.721461 degrees North and 96.250779 degrees West.

The city covers about 0.57 square miles (1.48 square kilometers) of land. It has no water area. Merrill is close to the Floyd River. It is also located right on U.S. Route 75. This highway makes it easy to travel. Merrill is only about 20 minutes north of Sioux City.
